A quote in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist inspired June Drummond to open her business: “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” But it was a quote by Colin Powell that gave her the final push: “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.”
During the very busy summer of 2017, running around trying at the last minute to find place cards to display the names of her sweets for the sweets table at the wedding of a very special client, at The Society of the Cincinnati – Anderson House, June walked into Write For You and the universe conspired.
The connection between Noreen Lucey (a founder of Write For You) and June was formed by a store employee, the bubbly Mary Antonelli, who realized that Noreen and June had things in common – the energy and resourcefulness needed to run a retail business, together with the determination to please clients. Noreen, then battling illness, talked with June for hours about Noreen’s wish to keep Write For You open and June’s vision of combining Write For You and June B Sweet.
Noreen guided June step-by-step on the challenges of running a stationery store, looking to ensure her Write For You would continue. June was later told that Noreen finally rested after the business was passed on, knowing that her two decades of dedication as an owner of Write For You would continue; a beautiful story that June repeats over and over to clients in appreciation for the trust that was placed in her.
June, a former lawyer from Brazil, first had the opportunity to spend a memorable summer in Chevy Chase Village as a teenager, hosted by a lovely local family, never thinking that some three decades later she would be back living in the Village -- making her dream come true.
Supporting a small business is to support a dream – a philosophy that June learned years ago working at the Inter-American Development Bank, where she had the opportunity to help many small NGOs in Latin America achieve their own dreams, whether through funding or by helping write about their potential projects.
